Indian Tribes Research

Students from IMT 510, Human Aspects of Information Systems, may seek assistance this weekend in finding information about tribal communities and about accessing full-text articles that they've identified. I've presented to these students twice, once in IMT 500 and again in IMT 510. However, they are new graduate students, many of whom have never attended a U.S. university.

On Tuesday, they are to turn in a bibliography and essay of three items on their tribal community. The communities are: Santee (probably Santee Sioux); Nuu-chah-nulth (Canada); Yaqui; Zuni; Chippewa; Cowlitz; Comanche; Mohawk.

Since they work in groups, they'll find that what books do exist are already checked out. And if the tribe is in the PNW, the material is likely in Special Collections, which is closed on the weekends. However, for the Cowlitz, I was able to find some excellent and freely available journal articles through a google scholar search, and two full-text recent dissertations through Theses & Dissertations Full-text.

This is the first part of their assignment. The main project is to create an information system for their community.
