GFIS Summer Hours

Claire Miccio, our GFIS coordinator, received an internship offer that she needed to fulfill the requirements of her degree in the Evans School. Unfortunately, it required that she begin work yesterday. She's updated the website to indicate that she isn't available. However, she will still be responding to email sent to GFIS or assigned to her through QuestionPoint through the end of the quarter.

How to help UW students who inquire over the summer?
  1. Between now and quarter's end, provide them with the gfis@u email or to the QP webform, and Claire will respond
  2. Show them the GFIS website -- Claire says that Community of Science is the best database to search.
  3. If they are in-person, they can also browse the GFIS collection - it would be good to search the catalog for relevant titles that might meet their needs.
Pre-GFIS, we did deal with these types of funding questions. It's just that we can't provide the same in-depth guidance that GFIS does.

I've been in communication the last few months with the Graduate School, but still do not have an answer as to whether they will continue the position. If they do fund the position, Claire will return in the Fall Quarter.

For the summer, the best we can do is to provide general guidance. We don't have anyone to provide in-depth consultations. However, we might occasionally refer an individual to her/his subject librarian for further discussion.
